Miami Summer Heat Safety and Your Dog
Miami summer heat poses a real risk to dogs. Many newcomers to the city do not realize how fast temperatures climb or how humidity slows cooling. High humidity can make the air feel hotter than the thermometer shows.
Breeds at higher risk include:
- Bulldogs and pugs. Flat faces make breathing harder
- Senior dogs and those with heart or lung conditions
- Puppies under six months Their systems are not fully developed
A dog cools itself by panting and through paw pads. Dogs do not sweat like people. Warm fur and hot pavement can block natural cooling. To test pavement temperature press the back of your hand on the ground for seven seconds. If it feels too hot for you it will burn your dog’s paws.
Heat safety tips:
- Walk only before dawn or after dusk Temperatures drop early and late
- Never leave a dog alone in a parked car Inside can heat up in minutes
- Carry fresh water and offer breaks in shade
Ways to help your dog cool off:
- Fill a shallow pool or large tub with cool water
- Apply a damp towel on the belly and paws
- Use a frozen water bottle wrapped in a thin cloth as a makeshift ice pack
Watch for signs of heatstroke such as:
- Heavy panting or drooling
- Weakness or disorientation
- Loss of consciousness
Emergency steps:
- Remove your dog to shade
- Apply cool water to paws and head
- Call a veterinarian right away
- Seek emergency care if symptoms worsen
